Detection Engineering as the Solution

Detection engineering treats security rules the way software engineering treats application code: every detection has a documented purpose, an expected behavior, version history, test cases, and an owner. A detection engineer does not simply write a Sigma rule and push it to production. Building a Sustainable Detection Program

Fixing alert fatigue is not a one-time project. It requires an ongoing program with clear metrics, defined ownership, and continuous feedback loops. The most effective detection programs track metrics like Mean Time to Detect (MTTD), true positive rate per rule, analyst time-to-triage, and detection coverage by ATT&CK technique. These metrics create accountability: if a rule's true positive rate drops below an acceptable threshold, it triggers a review and tuning cycle rather than silent acceptance of noise.

Equally important is the retirement process. Detection engineers must be empowered to deprecate rules that no longer serve the organization. If a data source changes format after an application upgrade and a rule begins generating false positives, the correct response is to update or retire the rule, not to tell analysts to ignore it.
